NEW INDIA DIGEST NO. 85, Nov.- Dec., 2001

WISDOM OF INDIA

Just as the Sun, though one, appears as many when reflected in many vessels of water, so does the one Atman, reflected in many individuals, appear to be manifold.

                                                                   - Srimad Bhagavatam xi.iii

Unless the pupil himself meditates and reflects and puts the teaching into practice with interest and perseverance, even the words of Brahma Himself fall flat on his ears.

- Yoga Vasishta

Hatred does not cease by hatred, but only love; this is the eternal rule.

                              - Dhammapada

Asceticism doesn’t lie in the ascetic robes, nor in the walking staff, nor in the ashes. It doesn’t lie in the earring, nor in the shaven head, nor blowing a conch: asceticism lies in remain pure amidst impurities.

- Guru Nanak

The senses, say the wise, are the horses, the roads they travel are the mazes of desire…When a man lacks discrimination and his mind is uncontrolled, his senses are unmanageable, like the restive horses of a charioteer. But when a man has discrimination and his mind is controlled, his senses, like the well-broken horses of a charioteer, lightly obey the rein.

- Katha Upanishad 1.3.3-6
